We have adopted a Beautiful Female Rottie. She was used as a breeder dog, but she is an Alpha and wouldn't let any male mate - So the family gave her up. We brought her home and instead of crating her we gave her free run of the home - she can go whereever she pleases. Previous owners kept her chained outside all day long and crated in basement all night - not very much interaction with the family. My problem - she LICKS - everything, I really mean everything. Walls, clothing, sheets, walls floors - Please someone help with - we don't get visiters anymore cause noone wants to constantly be licked. What can I do??

How long have you had her? Has she been seen by a vet?
Constant licking is sometimes stress related. My crew is very 'licky' when they have upset tummies - licking carpet, bedding and walls - looking for dog hair I guess!
Teaching the LEAVE IT command will help greatly in getting her to stop.
Here are a few different techniques for teaching this command: "Leave It" Command

We adopted her in November - so about 10 months, she has been seen by a Vet and we live really close to her old family we kept the same vet who has seen her since she was borne. The said nothing medically, try a square battery, or a lemon - we have tried both and they work for that moment and that moment only. Have tried the Leave It commant and she will not respond to that for licking. She will respond to the Leave It command when she picks up things that she's not supposed to have (kids socks etc . . .) but only for me not Husband or kids.

It sounds like this is a compulsive disorder. It probably was brought on by stress (comforting self) at the beginning and become a habit. Yelling probably or correcting probably causes more stress and therefore more licking. I would suggest redirecting her attention. Squeaking a toy or offering a treat, anything that gets her attention on you instead of what she is licking. I would also up her exercise, burning off stress and boredom. If you are not going to training classes, I would suggest going to build her confidence and give her a job. Her lack of companionship in her earlier years did damage to her and it will take time for her to learn that there is a good life rather than the lonely life she lead.

Thank you for the solid advise - I really appreciate it. She did go to a training school - before us and is very well behaved otherwise. It is just this one thing and I think maybe increasing her exercise might do it - thanks again

Carolyn, I wasn't mentioning training classes for her to learn manners. I was suggesting it for her to bond more with you and get comfortable that you are the leader so that she doesn't stress with things. It is hard to explain how much a training class makes the bonding stronger and how it makes the dog more comfortable with the leader. It some how gives them more confidence that the leader will handle the problem.

I understand now - and thank you. We have increased her exercise and does seem to be working. She has settled down a little in the evenings but she is still licking. We will try this training as well. Maybe Roxy is smarter than we are. Thanks again

I am glad the exercise is helping. Rotties are smart and need a job. I know my crew (4) keeps me on my toes. Let us know how things progress as you find more to stimulate her mind.
