Don't know the dogs background, but what formal training has he had?

What about socialization? Has he ever been 'iffy' about toys or other items, or people?

I don't mean to be negative, but very rarely is aggression or anything else all of a sudden - there were signs, but you didn't recognize them...

A full vet check is in order - eyes, joints, bloodwork, xrays if necessary...if he's in pain or having eye or ear issues then that would be a huge reason for his reactivity.

Also, getting him neutered might temper some of his attitude...but I'd also strongly recommend that he be put on a VERY strict NILIF regimen (Nothing In Life Is Free) as soon as possible once he's been seen by the vet and health issues are ruled out.

A google search will give you many descriptions of this program - basically, the dogs gets NOTHING for free - not even attention, going out for potty, food, coming in and out of the house - he must work for EVERY SINGLE THING.

Sounds like Goliath has gotten too big for his britches and thinks he rules the house!

I must say I agree with every thing Anne said. He is at the right age to be pushy and try to get away with being bossy.

Thank you Myia...

Seriously though...I have a 7-8 yr old male who WILL kick a$$ if given the chance. He is a pushy male who rarely, if ever, tries to push my buttons because he knows it simply will not work. Baron must earn EVERYTHING from me, including going out to potty, coming back inside, attention, food, permission to get on the sofa (when I'm home!).

I have no clue what my husband or inlaws do with him or what he's allowed to get away with when they are dealing with him...but I'm betting they require much less from him!

Anne and Myia are both right. Behavior doesn't just come out of the blue. There were signs. The thing is now to start dealing with it. Two's a really charged year for a dog just coming into himself. You've already gotten some great advice . . . so I can just sit back and agree with their advice and then cheer you on from the sidelines!

Tony,

Another thing you can do is check out a few GREAT books, all by Brenda Aloff, who is, in my opinion, BRILLIANT, and incredibly knowledgeable about dogs and body language.

The books are titled "Aggression in Dogs" and Canine Body Language" - I have both and they live in my van as I am always referring to them and love to be able to show them to people when recommending them.

The Aggression book has fabulous protocols to not only prevent aggression but also help handle and live with an aggressive dog.

While waiting for the books (or while reading them!), the NILIF program should be in place.

Please keep us updated!!
