Stop walk and sleep
      01/06/03 10:19 PM

This morning I walked Diego to the park. When it came to a half circle he stopped and sat. I pull the leash but he laid down, took the sleep position with his body's right side on the ground. I kept telling him to walk, he didn't move at all so I lifted his body into sit position, then we continue the walk. When we passed our house he repeated the sleep position in front of our car, and he really didn't care with my order to get up and get into the house. Then I came closer to his face, and I saw he closed half of his "sleepy" eyes !!
I got up and take off the leash from my hand and went to the door(offcourse with my eyes keep looking at him) , he suddenly got up and followed me. This is the first time Diego acted so lazy, and I don't want him to get permit to repeat it again.
My question is how to handle the dog with the stuck situation??
If we were far away from our house, I would not left him without the leash on my hand.

This is only a guess, but it sounds to me like he might be hurting. ???

His legs are good. I thought he was in pain also. When he was already got in the house he walked around the house normally, and even he teased Poppy. Then he had his breakfast, (his appetite was good) After finishing his meal, he went to the backyard, did his normal activity sniffing the plants and ate his bone. ?!?!

R2, I have to checked if there's empty wine's bottle at the trash bin

Was it real hot outside? I think Deigo is playing games with you, the brat.

Don`t want to frighten you, but could it have been some sort of a seizure? A call to the vet may help figure this out. Probably Diego was just being stubborn, but my in-laws had a scotty that would suddenly lay down with his eyes half open for a few monents. He had epilepsy. With proper meds, he lived a good long life. Please let us know what you find out from the vet. It`s most likely nothing at all, just a dog that didn`t feel like taking a walk.

Maybe he had a sleepless night for some reason and was really tired. maybe some noises kept him up or something he ate perhaps. Is he OK today?

Thanks for your nice reply. Last night my husband took Diego for walk and Diego didn't make any trouble. And so did when I walked him this morning.
He is ok today and I am sure he is healthy.
If he were stubborn, back to my question, how am I supposed to do ?

I had a Rottie that used to do the same thing to me. We would go for a nice long walk and then on the way back he was so pooped I would have to call my mom to come get us because he wouldn't budge. He was health as a horse just lazy

If he is being stubborn you could always take treats along with you and keep them in your pocket just in case.

Most of rotties are lazy, aren't they??. I do compare Diego with my late Boris.. Boris was so energetic while Diego is a big bad lazy boy.

If I bring some food, would it encourage him to always sleep while walking to get some snacks. (or Would he think that it is the reward from sleeping position ??? )
Diego is sneaky enough though ...

Give him the treat only when he listens to you. If he starts the sleepy bit, make him sit, stay and then come, give him a treat. That should wake him up.

It is hot where you live, maybe the heat has just worn him out?

I was reading through dog behavior sites and I came across this response from a trainer to a woman who had the same problem. Since it is fitting I thought I would post it for you.

It says when your dog stops and lays down and won't move not to bribe your dog.

__________________________________________________________

When the dog stops, and you walk back to her; you're inadvertently rewarding her bad behavior.

Instead, you need to glue the leash to your belt/crotch area, hold it with both hands and continue walking. The dog will realize that you're not going to stop. And she won't like the feeling of being left out at the end of the line, either. Continue walking as long as necessary. She won't like it. If she's really stubborn, she'll let you drag her for a few feet before she realizes that HER behavior does not DRIVE YOUR BEHAVIOR. But instead, YOUR BEHAVIOR drives HER behavior.

When she realizes who's calling the shots, she'll get off her duff and prance right up along side of you. At this point, praise her lavishly for making the right decision. But continue walking.
___________________________________________________________

It might be hard a little hard though trying to drag a Rottie. lol

Another thing to think about. My Mastiff did the same thing during training and sometimes walks. He didnt do it all the time though. I finally freaked out when I saw him limping one day. Since this was my first dog that was my own, I rushed him to the emergency room.(not to scare you) although we couldnt see a wound, and it only happened once in a while, it turned out he has OCD. This condition is like arthritis. It hurts when it wants to hurt. The only way to know for sure is having the hips x-rayed. The first time they x-rayed him they only did his paw. I later took him to the vet and asked for another x-ray. The results from the first one didnt sit right with me. My gut pulled me into the vets. Luckily I followed my gut. Good Luck
